4 X 4 offroad insurance – Tips for choosing a policy

If you have a 4 x 4 offroad vehicle then you need specialist 4 x 4 offroad insurance. When driving off road there are many hazardous that you would not come across when driving on normal roads and some of these would be a bigger risk to your vehicle. Many off road drivers also take part in rallies and competitions and in order to take part in these you would at least have to have liability insurance. Liability insurance would pay out in the event that any spectators were to be hurt while attending the rally or show as the result of your fault.

Depending on how much you paid out for your vehicle would depend on the type of insurance you would need for your vehicle. If you have a brand new vehicle that cost many thousands of pounds then you would need to take out fully comprehensive 4 x 4 offroad insurance. If you have a cheaper second hand model then you could look into third party fire and theft insurance. The benefits we are describing in this article refer to a fully comprehensive insurance policy as this provides more cover for your own vehicle.

Always check the wording and terms and conditions of any policy you are thinking of taking to find out what the insurance policy would pay out for windscreen and window damage. While usually a policy would allow you to make a claim on your insurance for windscreen damage there could extra excess that you have to pay out solely for windscreen replacement in your 4 x 4. However sometimes the provider will allow you to make a claim for minor damage without having to pay out the excess, so always double check the wording carefully.

Speaking of excess all providers will state a minimum amount of excess that you have to pay out in the event that you had to make a claim on the insurance. While there is a minimum amount you would be able to offer to pay out more and this could help to bring down the cost of the insurance. The excess is what you would have to pay out, out of your own pocket if you had to claim before the insurance company will take over the rest of the claim. While you could save money this way you would also need to bear in mind that the sum you choose has to be paid in a lump sum and if you were to be unlucky enough to make more than one claim in the same year you could lose out.

If you have made many modifications to your 4 x 4 then check to ensure that your policy would allow you to insure for agreed values. If it does then you would have your vehicle appraised for its true worth and this would be the amount you insured your vehicle for and which the provider would pay out if the worst should happen and your vehicle was written off. You could also check for salvage retention rights which would mean you might be able to salvage expensive parts from the wreck to use again.
