Ensure you have the correct offroad 4 x 4 cover

Offroad 4 x 4 cover differs greatly from the standard insurance policy you take out for your regular car. With this in mind there are certain features you want to check that are in the policy you are considering taking out. If for example you are taking part in shows and 4 x 4 rallies then you will need to ensure that you have the correct cover for attending and taking part in a show. One of the features you could look for is legal protection. This would provide you with cover if you were to cause damage and someone were to take legal proceedings against you. It would also provide protection if you should have to take legal proceedings against someone else.

Very often 4 x 4 enthusiasts customise their 4 x 4 by adding many expensive parts onto the vehicle. Due to this you might want to ensure that any offroad 4 x 4 cover you are considering taking out includes agreed values. Agreed values means that you would have your 4 x 4 valued and this would be the sum of money that you insured your car for. This is then the amount you get back if the worst case scenario arose and your vehicle should be written off. Without this you could lose a great deal of money, another feature you could look for is salvage retention rights. Again if your car was written off and you had salvage retention rights then you could claim back any expensive parts that you had added onto the car to use them again. However salvage retention rights would usually be at the discretion of the insurance provider. If the car was seen to be too badly damaged when it was written off then you could have to waiver these rights.

As you may be driving your 4 x 4 through rough terrains such as hills and woodland you could check the policy you were considering to find out if windscreen and window damage was included as standard in the policy. As the possibility of damage to windscreens would be higher due to the type of terrain you would be driving over you could be asked to pay additional excess just for the windscreen protection. However some providers will offer protection that comes with no excess if you claim for such as repairing minor scratches to the windscreen. This would need to be checked in the small print of the policy before you take it on.

If you take your 4 x 4 to rallies and events outside of the UK then you would have to check if European cover is included in any offroad 4 x 4 cover that you are looking at. If you hold what is known as a green card then this will show that you have at the very least the minimal amount of insurance needed if you should have to make a claim. An advantage of the green card is that you would not have to apply for insurance when you came to the border of each different country which saves a great deal of time and worry.
