Offroad insurance – Tips for choosing your policy
If you are looking for offroad insurance then you need more than just the regular type of car insurance. Off road driving often means going over some of the roughest terrains possible and damage can occur more often than when driving in normal conditions. Therefore while certain features of a “normal” insurance policy will be in 4 x 4 cover you will also have to look for other more specialist features.
You would almost certainly want to take out fully comprehensive insurance for your 4x4 offroad vehicle. This is the dearest type of insurance but it does come with the most cover for your own vehicle. If you have an older vehicle then you might want to check out third party only but this would only provide you with protection against loss of your vehicle to fire and theft.
If you have made modifications to your 4x4 then you should look for cover that has agreed values. Agreed values mean that you will have your car valued independently and then is the amount that you would insure your car for. If then the worst situation arose and you lost your vehicle you would get back the agreed amount. If you did not have agreed values then you could lose out on a great deal of money.
You could also check to ensure that the policy you were considering came with salvage retention if you have made many modifications to your 4x4. In the event that your vehicle was written off you would then be able to claim back parts of the vehicle to be used again. However salvage rights would be at the discretion of the insurance company. If your vehicle was too badly damaged then you would have to give up salvage rights.
You would also have to check the features of any offroad insurance you were considering taking out to ensure that your windscreens and windows were protected in your policy. While the majority of policies will include windscreen damage you could have to pay a separate amount of excess to have these insured so this would have to be checked in any insurance policy you were considering.
If you travel around attending rallies then you might need European cover in your offroad insurance. Without European cover you could lose out on a great deal of money that would have to come out of your own pocket in the event you had an accident. You would have to have at least the very minimal amount of insurance and if you held a green card you would not have to apply for insurance at the border of every country you travelled to.
If you attend shows then check your offroad insurance to find out if it included liability damage. This is generally considered to be essential before entering your car into a show or rally. Liability damage would allow anyone who should get injured by your car to make a claim. if you did not have this insurance you would have to pay court and solicitor costs out of your own pocket which could mount up to a costly sum of money.
